LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A group of concerned citizens want the mayor to take a look at the way metro police use force in some situations.

Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together, known as CLOUT, spent 30 minutes talking to the mayor and the police chief.

Members of the group said they’re concerned police use excessive force in some situations when dealing with the mentally ill and drug-addicted.

“Whenever they have to pull out their weapons, they risk themselves, their lives and the lives of our citizens,” CLOUT Co-President Reginald Barnes said.

They want the mayor to review police policy.

“It’s time for us to get some serious answers, some true, rigorous evaluation on policies and procedures, as well as training, particularly as it deals with those with mental illness,” Barnes said.

Fischer released a statement saying, “I appreciate the efforts of CLOUT on important issues such as affordable housing, the Living Room project, and issues related to mental illness and addiction. CLOUT’s current focus on LMPD’s de-escalation training is another important issue. I asked for a review last year, which Chief Conrad provided. CLOUT brought additional information today, which I have asked my team to review and respond to within the next six weeks.”

Barnes said the mayor did not set a date for a second meeting.
