The City of Topeka has about $1 million sitting in a housing trust fund that one local organization says should be used to create affordable housing.
On Wednesday, Topeka Jump, a local social service organization, asked the city to use its housing trust fund. The group says the city hasn’t touched the money since the program was created nearly two years ago.
“When if not now? And what are the hindrances to getting that ball rolling to start utilizing those funds,” Delmar White with Topeka JUMP said.
“I saw a mother on 29th and Wanamaker changing her daughter’s clothes in a car wash so they can go to school. I mean that’s not good,” Carl Frazier a member of the Topeka Center for Peace and Justice said.
According to a recent report from city planners, the city plans to work with industry experts to improve the housing trust fund’s design and bolster it with the help of federal agencies.
