Dozens of clergy members unite to endorse a proposed homeless services center in Lenexa. The leaders come from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish congregations across Johnson County.

They penned an open letter to the community ahead of a Lenexa City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening.

Members of the Lenexa City Council are expected to discuss a proposal to turn an old hotel into a shelter to house and provide assistance to people who do not have permanent homes across Johnson County.

As faith leaders, we are committed to the principles of compassion, justice, and service to others and believe that a community is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members. The Homeless Services Center is a critical element in building a more caring and resilient Johnson County – we pray that you will support the creation of this life-saving resource.

The group also plans to hold a 6 p.m. prayer service ahead of the Lenexa City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

The issue of the shelter is controversial one.

While Lenexa leaders have said they want to be part of a solution, city staff recommended rejecting the proposal. They said they were concerned about funding, safety, and the overall plan of the shelter proposed near Interstate 35 and 95th Street.

Last week, Johnson County Commissioners sent a letter urging Lenexa City Council members to approve the proposal.

Tuesday’s meeting will be held at Lenexa City Hall. It starts at 7 p.m.
